If you’re a poker player, then you’ve probably heard of the term ICM before. But what does it mean? And how can you use it when you’re next playing at the live or online felt?
We asked 888poker Ambassador Dominik Nitsche to give us a bit more information about the Independent Chip Model. With almost $19 million in lifetime earnings, as well as four WSOP bracelets, who better to run us through the basics!
ICM exist in tournaments that pay more than one place, because this means that even you win all the chips, you don’t win all the money. Using a traditional 9 man SnG (Sit and Go) as an example, these events typically pay 50% to the winner, 30% to the runner-up. How To Use The Independent Chip Model (ICM). Try out my free ICM calculator ’CHIMP’ to work out ICM in SNGs. It’s a really handy ICM program. How to use ICM In my previous article that answered the question ’what is ICM in Poker?’ We found out that different chip stack sizes had varying amounts of equity in the overall tournament prize pool. Remember: With ICM, we can convert the value of chips in a poker tournament into real dollars. Independent Chip Model: Example of an ICM calculation. Let’s make a sample ICM computation for the following situation: in a full ring SNG, 3 players are left (the. What is ICM?
Betacular cricket. So what is ICM?
’Simply put it’s a model that helps us make better tournament decisions by assigning a $ value to everyone’s stack,’ says Nitsche. He says that in cash games it’s very easy to understand that the only thing that matters, is accumulating more chips.
’In tournaments that’s far from the truth.’
The basics idea is simple, according to Nitsche. Don’t play like you’re in a cash game.
’It’s about passing up those marginal spots and overall trying not to bust. Busting tournaments is what really hurts you.’
That’s because if you’re out, you’re out! You have zero chance of winning any money. Whereas as long as you’re in the tournament, you always have a chance.Do You Need to Be a Maths Genius?
Most people assume that in order to get a full understanding of ICM, you need to be a maths whizz to crunch those numbers in your head. Nitsche says that’s far from the truth.
’It’s all about practice,’ he says. ’Like with everything it’s practice that makes perfect and since the math is best figured out away from the tables you don’t need to be a genius! No one is running precise ICM calculations on the fly!’
Although a very important concept in poker, it becomes even more so around the bubble. Early on in tournaments it doesn’t matter very much at all, but during the bubble, your short stack could potentially turn into a guaranteed min-cash in the blink of an eye!

Nitsche says that final tables are ’All about ICM,’ but warns that ICM isn’t perfect.
’It’s the best model we have, but at final tables it gets tricky because ICM isn’t perfect. According to ICM, tons of professionals make crazy mistakes on final tables. Sometimes there can be reasons to sightly deviate but usually, it’s best to follow ICM guidelines and not go crazy!
’ICM really influences all decisions. At a final table I simply don’t play my usual ’win all the chips style ’ and rather focus on playing the tournament.’Final Table Scenario
Here’s a scenario to help you with your ICM knowledge that Nitsche put together:
There are two short stacks at the Final Table and you’re second in chips to a runaway chip leader who has just shoved on you. This is a situation where you do not want to bust, says Nitsche.
’Yet I always see inexperienced players call off too loose.’
So what is the correct answer? Should you call? Nitsche says it depends on stack sizes and payout structure, but gives one last piece of advice: ’People call all ins tooo happily. That’s the definition of ICM suicide.’Next Steps with ICM
So what do you do now in order to improve your knowledge of ICM? Nitsche recommends holdemresources.net.
’They have a free calculator that can convert final table stacks to ICM $ value,’ says Nitsche. ’I’d recommend running a couple stack size and payout distributions to get a feel for how much each stack is worth. Once you’ve mastered this you can start by practicing icm push/fold on icmizer.’Sign Up to 888poker Today!

When you’ve played poker for years, it’s easy to forget that technical poker speak may as well be a different language. Many players just picked up a deck of cards for the first time and are wondering what the hell a reverse implied range merge against a large stack to pot ratio is.
Maybe you are new to poker as well and want to start analyzing the game at a deeper level, but the lingo and foreign concepts get in the way. To help, Card Player brings you this brand new series, Explain Poker Like I’m Five.Icm Poker Strategy Examples
Every issue, we’ll take on a new term or idea, perhaps one you might come across elsewhere in this very magazine, and we’ll break it down to its simplest components.
The Concept:ICM
What Is It?
ICM, also known as the Independent Chip Model, is a mathematical formula used by poker players to calculate the equity of their chip stack in a tournament. Players often use these calculations to make better decisions in subsequent hands or even to determine a fair and equitable deal when chopping up remaining prize money. Tournament chips hold a non-linear value, meaning one big blind is worth more to a short stack than one big blind for the chip leader.
Okay, Now Explain It Like I’m Five Apps that pay you to play games.Icm Poker Strategy
ICM is math that tells you how much your tournament chips are worth in real dollars.
Give Me An Example
Imagine a $10 sit-and-go with nine total players, creating a total prize pool of $90. The first place prize is $45. The second place prize is $30 and the third place prize is $15.
Each player started with 1,500 in chips, putting 13,500 chips in play. After an hour of action, there are just four players remaining with the following stack sizes and blinds of 100-200:
Joe – 6,200
Mary – 3,900
Erik – 2,600
Wendy – 800
After inputting the above numbers into an ICM calculator, we can learn a lot about correct strategy for playing on the bubble. For example, Joe might be less inclined to call an all-in from Mary without a big hand in order to protect his sizable chip lead. Erik, on the other hand, would be making a big ICM mistake if he called all in with a marginal hand, since Wendy is down to her last four big blinds.
If the four players agreed to an ICM prize pool chop, the payouts would be as follows:Icm Poker Theory
Joe – $33.06
Mary – $27.24
Erik – $21.90
Wendy – $7.80
As you can see, Joe’s big chip lead means his current stack is worth just over second-place money. Despite being extremely short-stacked, Wendy’s chips still hold significant value.
This calculation is different than a chip chop, which would theoretically award Joe $41.40, which is 46 percent of the remaining prize pool. Wendy, holding just six percent of the chips in play, would be awarded just $5.40.
This contrast is why many poker players prefer to make deals using ICM, while simultaneously adjusting for the differences in skill level between the remaining players. ♠Poker Icm DefinitionRelated Articles
